5 Tips for Beach-Ready Makeup

We all want to look effortlessly flawless when you hit the beach, but if you’re haunted by visions of sliding foundation and smudged mascara, you are not alone! We spoke to the professionals over at Fragrance Direct to discover their top tips for achieving perfect, beach-ready makeup.

Armed with their expert advice, you’ll own holiday beauty. Here are the five things you need to know…

Always wear sun protection

It might be tempting to go without to build up a summer glow as quickly as possible but sun protection is the most important part of any summer beauty routine. It protects your skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays – and you can still definitely get a tan!

Apply a generous layer of sun cream all over your face and neck and leave it to dry for at least 20 minutes before you start your makeup. And don’t forget lip care. Look after your pout with a hydrating SPF lip balm.

Ditch the foundation

Your usual foundation will likely be too heavy and creamy to wear under the sun. Smudging and sliding is definitely on the cards. Instead, go for a light tinted moisturiser or a BB cream. You’ll get a fresh, natural finish without missing out on coverage. Not keen on sun cream? Use products with a built-in SPF. All the protection without the extra time.

Work with the sun, not against it

The sun doesn’t have to be your enemy when it comes to makeup. In fact, if you work with it, you’ll get fabulous results.

To get a head start, accentuate those areas where the sun naturally hits with a highlighter stick. Think cheekbones, nose, chin and forehead.  To max out the look, grab a body illuminator and cheat your way to a sunkissed look by applying it to your collarbones, shoulders and shin bones.

Don’t reapply, blot

Reapplying throughout the day increases the chances of your perfect makeup sliding off. Embrace the beach – and the more natural look that comes with it. If you want to freshen up your look before you go for a shoreside cocktail, dab away any shine with blotting paper or apply just touch of powder along the T-Zone to mattify any oily patches.

Go waterproof

When you just can’t resist the lure of the crystal clear seas, you don’t want to have to spare a thought for your makeup. Avoid spending the rest of your day with dreaded panda eyes by going waterproof. Waterproof mascara is the obvious option but you can fully ocean-proof your look with waterproof eyeliner, eye cream, lip liner and brow pencil.
